NCRB releases crime report

According to the report released by the NCRB, India has registered a 6.16% rise in crimes against women for the year 2017 compared to 2016.

Key Points:

  • Majority of the cases under crimes against women were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives’ (27.9%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (21.7%), ‘Kidnapping & Abduction of Women’ (20.5%) and ‘Rape’ (7.0%)".
  • There were 3,59,849 cases of crime against women which were reported in the country. Uttar Pradesh has topped the list with 56,011 cases followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal with 30,002 cases.
  • 58,880 incidents of rioting were reported, out of which the maximum incidents were reported from Bihar - 11,698, followed by Uttar Pradesh - 8,990 and Maharashtra - 7,743.
  • Out of the total riots that are reported, sectarian and communal riots accounted for 723 and 183 incidents respectively.
  • According to the report, Lucknow and Assam are the Most Unsafe City.
  • Nagaland was found to have the lowest rate of crimes against women followed by Sikkim and Mizoram.
