New algorithm developed to prevent cyber-attacks on GPS devices

New algorithm developed to prevent cyber-attacks on GPS devices

Researchers at University of Texas at San Antonio in the US, have developed a novel algorithm that may help and detect and prevent cyber-attacks on GPS –enabled devices in real time.

How it will be helpful?

It basically helps in mitigating effects of GPS attacks on electrical grids and other GPS reliant technologies.

For example, the US electrical power grid depends on GPS to give time stamps for its measurements at stations across the country. Researchers in laboratories across the world have shown that the system can be vulnerable to spoofing cyber-attacks that can disrupt the system’s time and location data.

How it works?

A malicious cyber attacker can clone the GPS signal and display the wrong time or the wrong location. It can send people to the wrong location or render hours of data useless. This algorithm, which can be applied to cell phones or computer as easily as anew app, has the ability to recognize false GPS signals and counter attack while it occurs.
