NEW TIGER RESERVE IN CHATTISGARH

Context:

On October 5, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the Chhattisgarh government’s proposal to declare the combined areas of the Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary and Guru Ghasidas National Park as a Tiger Reserve.

The New Reserve:

• It is located in the northern part of the state, bordering Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.
• It will be the 4th Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh, after the Udanti-Sitanadi, Achanakmar, and Indravati Reserves.

Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary:

• It is located in the Surajpur District of Chhattisgarh.
• It is named after Tamor Hill and Pingla Nalla, the old and prominent features of the area.
• It was notified as Wildlife Sanctuary in 1978.
• In 2011, it was notified by Chhattisgarh's Government as a part of Surguja Jashpur Elephant Reserve.

Guru Ghasidas National Park:

• Guru Ghasidas National Park is also known as Sanjay National Park.
• It is a national park in the Koriya district of Chhattisgarh and Sidhi, Singrauli districts of Madhya Pradesh state.
• It covers an area of 466.657 km2 and is a part of the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve.
• It is located in the Narmada Valley dry deciduous forests ecoregion.
