Nipah Virus: Explained 

Recently, 3 people died due to Nipah Virus in Kerala. This was third such outbreak in India. First was in Siliguri, West Bengal and Second in Nadia, West Bengal (with 100% fatality).According to WHO, Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis (where animal diseases can be transmitted to people ) that causes severe disease in both animals and humans.

How it is Transmitted:-

  • Natural Host- Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.
  • Intermediate host -Direct contact with infected Pigs or by consuming fruits eaten by infected bats and birds. Through contact with other NiV-Infected people.
  • First Outbreak - Kampong Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998.

Symptoms of Nipah Virus are:-

  • Fever,
  • Headache,
  • Drowsiness,
  • Disorientation,
  • Mental Confusion,
  • Coma,
  • Potentially death.

No specific treatment though primary treatment is intensive supportive care.
