NMPB signs MoU with ICAR for Germplasm conservation

The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), affiliated with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research functioning under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) under Ministry of AYUSH on 6 July 2020.

Key Points:

  • The objective of the MoU is to aid in the Germplasm conservation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Genetic Resources (MAPGRs) at the designated places of ICAR-NBPGR for a long term duration.
  • The conservation will be done at the National Gene bank on the basis of availability in the long-term storage module and or at Regional Station for medium-term storage modules.
  • Under the MoU, hands-on training will also be provided on the conservation techniques of plant germplasm to the working group of NMPB.
  • The aim of the MoU is to conserve the germplasm cost-effectively and safely for generations to ensure economic and social security.
  • Detailed modalities for the storage of seeds of MAPGRs will be developed by NMPB, and the ICAR-NBPGR and reports will be submitted to the respective organisations periodically.
  • Conservation will help in sustainable development by assisting in the protection of natural resources so that the variety of genes are not destroyed.
