NOROVIRUS

Context:

At present, the United Kingdom is reporting an outbreak of norovirus. Since the end of May, England has recorded 154 cases of norovirus in the country.

Norovirus:

  • It is sometimes called the winter vomiting bug, and is the most common cause of gastroenteritis.
  • It is very contagious.
  • Infection includes non-bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • People suffering from norovirus disease can shed billions of virus particles.

How is Norovirus Catched by a Person?

  • A person can catch this virus by coming in direct contact with an infected person.
  • By consuming contaminated water and food and also touching contaminated surfaces with one’s hands and then putting them in the mouth unwashed.

Symptoms:

  • Symptoms of norovirus are diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain and nausea.
  • It can cause inflammation of the intestines or the stomach. Other symptoms of this virus are fever, headache, and body aches.
  • People usually show the symptoms within 12 to 48 hours and they can last up to 1 to 3 days.
  • As there are various types of noroviruses hence, infection with one type may not protect other types so it can be contracted multiple times.

Treatment:

  • There is no specific medicine for this virus but experts have suggested drinking plenty of liquids.
