NORTHEAST ON WHEELS (NEW) EXPEDITION

Context:

On 13 January 2022, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs, launched a Bike Expedition in New Delhi.

Key Points:

• The name of the bike expedition is North East on Wheels (NEW) Expedition.
• The expedition was launched under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
• It is jointly organized by the Amazing Namaste foundation, which promotes the culture of India's North Eastern States and the Culture Ministry.

North East on Wheels (NEW) Expedition:

• The event is scheduled between April 8-16, 2022.
• It will mark the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
• Around 75 Bikers will participate in this expedition. They will be selected from all over the country.
• The Bikers will cover about 9000 km in the NorthEast Region travelling in 6 groups.
• The expedition will also promote the Department of Tourism's Dekho Apna Desh program, focusing on this vision.
•  The Riders will also spread a message focusing on the importance of road safety.

Reorientation of "Look East" Policy:

• The decision of the Government of India to restructure the "Look East" policy to make it an "Act East" policy is an indication of the action-driven agenda.
• The North-East states are now talking about projects, industrial activities, and other emerging areas of economic integration such as Tourism and Logistics.

Many young people in this region today are role models for others, be it sports, business, community enterprises, etc.
