Nuclear energy without radiation

Nuclear energy without radiation

Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) or cold fusion has been again in the news as India is taking tentative steps towards restarting research into it. Previously, it was shut down in 1993 at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

What is cold fusion?

In Cold Fusion, interaction of hydrogen or deuterium with metals such as palladium, zirconium and nickel is claimed to set off a nuclear reaction at lower temperature, releasing energy.

The first claim was made in 1989 by Martin Fleschimann and Stanley Pons at the University of Utah. It received praise for producing clean energy but criticized because it lacked scientific rigour.

Cold fusion seeks to produce nuclear energy without harmful radiations, complex equipment and the application of very high temperatures and pressures.

Criticism:

Critics say that, there is no guarantee that every time a cold fusion or LENR experiment is done, energy will be produced, say critics.

Future

  • Research is underway in the US, Japan, Russia, China and many other countries.
  • India should take up this research because as other countries may get ahead and India might have to pay for the intellectual property right if they become successful in their research.
  • Currently the research is going on in S Vyasa University, Bangalore. They have been working on triggering fusion in hydrogen on the surface of nickel, which has hydrogen soaking properties, the ingredients are heated up to 1200 C.
