OBICUS survey launched by RBI

The quarterly released Order books, Inventories and Capacity Utilisation Survey (OBICUS) of the manufacturing sector was launched by the Reserve bank of India(RBI) on 16 April 2020.

Key Points:

  • The OBICUS survey provides essential information for the formulation of monetary policy.
  • This is the 49th survey and for the January-March 2020 reference period.
  • The survey has been conducted since 2008 every four months and covers 2500 companies both in the public and private sphere and provides information about each article.
  • The information gathered in the survey consists of pending orders, the backlog of orders, total inventories with a breakup between work-in-progress (WIP) and finished goods (FG) inventories, quantitative data on new orders received during the reference quarter and article-wise production.
  • The data gathered at the company level for the survey is treated as confidential and never disclosed.
  • The capacity utilisation (CU) had reduced from 69.1 percent in the previous quarter to 68.6 percent in the third quarter of 2019-20.
