OVER 4 CRORE UNORGANIZED WORKERS REGISTERED AT e-SHRAM PORTAL

Context:

In less than two months, more than 4 crores workers have registered on the e-Shram portal.

Types of Registered Workers:

• Workers in various occupations such as construction, clothing manufacturing, fishing, gig and platform work, street vending, household chores, agriculture and partners, the transport sector are registered on the portal.
• In some of these areas, a large number of immigrant workers are also involved.
• All informal employees, including immigrants, can now take advantage of various social security and employment programs by registering on the e-Shram portal.

Recent Data:

• According to live data, 4.09 crore employees are registered on the portal. Of these, 50.02% of the beneficiaries are women and 49.98% are men.
• According to the latest data, states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are ahead of this initiative with the highest registration rate, as shown in the graph below. However, putting this number in perspective should be careful.
• Smaller states and union territories (UTs) are understood to have a small number of registered workers. Also, this drive needs to gain momentum in states and UTs such as Manipur, Meghalaya, Goa and Chandigarh.
