PIYUSH GOYAL - INDIA’S SHERPA FOR G20

Context:

Piyush Goyal, Commerce and Industry Minister has been appointed as India’s Sherpa for the G20. He has replaced Suresh Prabhu with India’s G20 Sherpa.

About his Appointment:

• He has been appointed as India’s Sherpa for the G20 meet that is expected to be held in Italy at the end of October.
• The next G20 Summit is scheduled for 30-31 October 2021 under the Italian Presidency.

Next G20 Summits:

• India will hold the G20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and will call the G20 leaders’ summit in 2023 for the 1st time.
• India will be part of the G20 Troika (preceding, current, and incoming G20 Presidencies) from 1 December 2021 till 30 November 2024.

G20:

• It is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union.
• India has been a member of the G20 since its inception in 1999.
• It brings together 19 of the world’s leading economies and the European Union, with its members accounting for more than 80% of global GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the global population.
• Since 2008, the group convenes at least once a year, with summits involving each member's head of government or state, finance minister, foreign minister, and other high-ranking officials.
