Portable oxygen unit designed by scientists at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune

The scientists working at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research have designed and developed a portable oxygen unit that can be utilised in remote rural areas, hospitals and homes.

Key Points:

  • The Portable Oxygen Unit does not need an oxygen cylinder and by utilising the unit, the demand for oxygen cylinders and ventilators can be reduced.
  • Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, has stated that if the patients affected by the coronavirus are provided with oxygen in the initial stages, then ventilators are not required later, making the portable oxygen unit an important development to combat the situation created due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The unit will allow the flow of 35 to 40 percent oxygen at a rate of 0.5 to 0.15 litres per minute.

Note:

  • The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), has a pan-India presence with a dynamic network of 39 outreach centres, 38 national laboratories, 5 units and 3 Innovation Complexes.
  • CSIR was founded in September 1942 and is currently headed by Shekhar C. Mande.
  • The organisation is granted 90 percent of the US patents that are granted to any publicly funded Research and Development organisation of India.
  • The organisation files around 200 Indian patents and 250 foreign patents every year on an average.
