Pritivirajsing Roopun elected as new President of Mauritius

Mauritius lawmakers selected former arts and culture minister Pritivirajsing Roopun as the President of the country. He will take over the position which was lying vacant since March 2018. 

Key Points:

  • Prithvirajsing Roopun (62) is a lawyer by profession who was first elected to the National Assembly in 2000 and has been the minister of arts and culture, social integration and regional administration. 
  • Since attaining independence from Britain in 1968, Mauritius has become one of the most stable democracies in Africa.

About Mauritius:

  • In Mauritius, the PM is head of the government and holds the political power while the president is head of state but has no executive role and is considered the guardian of the constitution.
  • Mauritius is developed from a poor agriculture-based economy into a prosperous economy which is striving to reach high-income status by the year 2025.
  • Driven by tourism, the islands boast pristine beaches and coral reefs, the textile industry and also a booming financial sector, the economy expanded at close to four per cent in 2018.
  • Youth unemployment and inequality are the major growing problems, with joblessness at 22% for young Mauritians and the gap between rich and poor seem rising.
