PROGRESS OF INDIAN AGRICULTURE PRESENTED IN THE G-20 AGRICULTURE MINISTERS’ MEETING

Context:

Union Minister Shri Tomar unveiled Indian agricultural progress at the G-20 Agriculture Ministers' meeting. Shri Tomar led a 4-member Indian delegation to the G20 summit. Looking at the COVID-19 epidemic, this meeting was organized in hybrid mode. Indian Delegation included Drs. Abhilaksh Likhi, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare; Joint Secretary Ms Alaknanda Dayal and Dr B. Rajender.

The theme of the Session:

  • The theme of this session was "Working together to achieve the Zero Hunger goal: successful projects implemented by the Ministries of Agriculture".

Key Points Mentioned by Shri Tomar:

  • The United Nations has accepted the Indian Government's proposal and declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
  • The Indian agricultural sector was not affected even during the COVID epidemic.
  • The Minister expressed satisfaction with the fact that the various Indian Government's programs to keep the Agri market strong and the Agri agricultural support during the COVID period have helped the agricultural sector to become more efficient. During the period 2020-2021, along with an increase in grain production, there was a significant increase in exports.
  • The Minister announced that under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, the government provides Rs. 6,000 per year for smallholder farmers. To date, Rs 1.58 lakh crore has been deposited into the bank accounts of more than 11.37 crore farmers under this program.
  • Shri Tomar said biofortified varieties are a source of basic food rich in micronutrients. They are being promoted to remove malnutrition. 17 such varieties of plants have been developed and released for cultivation.
