Promulgation of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019

Promulgation of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019

The Union Cabinet has approved the promulgation of Indian Medical Council (second amendment) Second Ordinance 2019 to allow the Board of Governors to run the Indian Medical Council (IMC).

IMC was superseded in September 2018 through an ordinance but it is about to lapse as any ordinance has 6 months to be presented in the parliament. If it doesn’t get through the approval of parliament it lapses.

With the new ordinance in place it can last further 6 months.

The proposal will enable the Board of Governors appointed to continue to exercise the powers of MCI and that of the central government under Section 10A of the Indian Medical Council (IMC) Act, 1956, so as to ensure transparency, accountability and quality in the governance of medical education in the country.

What does MCI does?

The Council grants recognition of medical qualifications, gives accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in India.

The current President of MCI is Dr. Jayshreeben Mehta.

The planning commission has recommended the replacement of Medical Council of India (MCI) with National Medical Commission (NMC)
