RAILWAY-BORNE MISSILE TEST BY NORTH KOREA

Key Points:

  • Two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) travelled approximately 430 kilometres (267 miles) to a maximum altitude of 36 km (22 miles) after being launched east along the northwest coast of North Korea.
  • The test was done in the North Pyongan province to test and judge the expertise of action procedures of the railway-borne regiment.
  • The country tested the railway-based system for the first time in September 2021, saying it was designed to combat the strike in any threat.

Background:

  • Since New Year's Day, North Korea has launched three missiles aimed at rapid weapons tests. The last two launches involved what the country's media call "hypersonic missiles" capable of moving at high speeds and moving after launch.

Ballistic Missiles:

  • A short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) is a missile with about 1,000 kilometres or less. Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles follow the suborbital trajectory. They are famous for their strike distance.
  • On the other hand, hypersonic arrows are known for their speed, and their very high speed keeps them from getting caught.
