Record number of freight trains operated by India-Bangladesh in June 2020

A record number of over 100 freight trains were operated by the Indian and Bangladesh Railways in June 2020 which carried essential goods amidst the disruption that was caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Key Points:

  • The Indian railways operated 103 freight trains which carried essentials such as chillies, maize, turmeric, ginger, sugar, finished products, onions and other raw materials to the Bangladesh Railways.
  • The Railways of Bangladesh has introduced the Parcel Train Service which will have a carrying capacity of 238 metric tons following the successful operation of freight trains.
  • The initiative will provide the traders with an opportunity to import a smaller quantity of goods.
  • The Bangladesh Railways has also agreed to enable and provide support to the Container Train Service via the Benapole-Petrapole Rail Link which will aid the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India during the ongoing crisis by reducing the disruption caused in the supply chain.

Note:

  • Bangladesh is the biggest trade partner of India in South Asia, and the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India has increased steadily in the last decade. India has exported goods to Bangladesh worth USD 9.21 billion in the FY 2018-19 and imports from Bangladesh in the same period stood at USD1.04 billion.
