Researchers at IIT-M develop solar ‘Parabolic Trough Collector’

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has developed a ‘Parabolic Trough Collector’ that is equipped with enhanced features to serve the needs of the industries.

Key Points:

  • The new trough collector is lightweight, cost-effective and efficient and can function in different climatic conditions.
  • A ‘Trough Collector’ is a device which focuses energy on a small area, which in turn is absorbed and utilised for heating and generating energy.
  • The development can pave the way for sustainable generation of heat in the agriculture and industrial process sectors.
  • The device developed will assist manufacturers in constructing solar energy devices with higher efficiency and follows the Centre’s concept on National Solar Mission according to which a target has been set to provide 20,000 MW solar power by 2022.
  • The team of researchers was led by IIT-M professor K Srinivas Reddy, who stated concentrated solar power technology could help in meeting the thermal and electrical energy requirements due to its high dispatchability and reliability.
  • States like Haryana, Bihar, Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya have great potential to harness this energy.
