Researchers develop a new catalyst to turn CO2 from car exhaust pipes

Researchers develop a new catalyst to turn CO2 from car exhaust pipes

A new catalyst has been developed by researches where the catalyst can actually help in turning carbon dioxide (CO2) from car exhaust pipes and also other sources into fuels like natural gas or propane.

Key Points:

  • Research have shown some success to yield four times more ethane, propane, and butane than the existing methods that use similar processes.
  • Recently various studies have shown few successes in conversion, but the latest approach was from the engineers at Stanford University in the US where it was proved that it yields four times more ethane, propane and butane than the existing methods which use similar processes.
  • This group will also be developing ways to make other beneficial products, not just fuels. One such product is olefins, which can be used in a number of industrial applications and are the main ingredients for plastics.
  • One can actually imagine how a carbon-neutral cycle produces fuel from carbon dioxide and then burns it, creating new carbon dioxide that then gets turned back into fuel.
  • Although this process is still just a lab-based prototype, the researchers expect that this could be expanded enough, which would produce usable amounts of fuel. Further steps include trying to reduce harmful by-products from these reactions, such as the toxic pollutant carbon monoxide.
