Researchers have spotted a surviving core of Jupiter-like planet near a distant star

Researchers have spotted a rocky planet orbiting a distant star at very high speed and is 39 times as massive as the Earth. The astronomers have concluded that it is the surviving core of a planet bigger than Jupiter that was stripped of the Atmosphere.

Key Points:

  • The body discovered is the first planetary core and is the largest rocky planet discovered. The discovery presents opportunities for understanding the interiors of the gas giants such as Jupiter.
  • The planet has been named TOI-849b, and it orbits a star a bit cooler and smaller than the sun, the star is located at a distance of 730 light-years from Earth.
  • The diameter of the planetary body is 43,500 km (27,000 miles), which is a little smaller than Neptune which is the smallest gas planet of our solar system and is much bigger than the diameter of Earth which is 12,700 km (7,900 miles).
  • The body orbits its star, at a much closer distance than Mercury, the innermost planet of our solar system orbits the sun. The body completes its orbit in 18 Hours and travels at ten times the speed of light.
