Russia with a four-year ban from international sports events

Russia with a four-year ban from international sports events

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has banned Russia for four years from major global sporting events which includes the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar over manipulated doping data.

Key Points:

  • Under the sanctions, Russian sportsmen and women would still be allowed to compete in the Olympics that will be held next year and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
  • Russian Anti-Doping Agency has a total of 21 days to either accept the decision or to send the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
  • This ban will still leave the door open for Russian athletes, who can prove they are not tainted by the scandal, to compete as neutral athletes.

WADA:

  • The World Anti-Doping Agency-WADA is a foundation that is initiated by the International Olympic Committee. This is based in Canada. The main aim is to promote, coordinate and to monitor the fight against drugs in the field of sports.
  • The agency's key activities include education, scientific research, development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti-Doping Code, whose provisions are enforced by the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.
