Russian President wins presidential polls with a large number of votes

According to preliminary results, a resounding victory has been achieved by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin in his efforts to retain the power of the President till 2036 as its citizens voted for the political status quo of the country.

  • The polls were conducted across the nation on 1 July 2020 for the cast of ballots in a referendum on amendments in the Russian Constitution.
  • The preliminary results have paved the way for Putin to retain the powers of President until 2036.
  • An initial tally of results was released by the Central Election Commission of Russia on 1 July 2020 after 50 percent of ballots were processed and the results showed that 76.24 percent citizens voted in favour of the constitutional amendments.
  • The voting was then rescheduled to 1 July 2020 amid the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic but was started on 25 June 2020. The step has been taken to avoid overcrowding and maintain social distancing during the referendum.
  • Approximately 110 million voters from Kaliningrad on the Baltic coast to Kamchatka on the pacific coast voted in the referendum.
  • The President of Russia announced the reforms to the 1993 Russian constitution in January 2020.
