RUSSIA’S NAUKA MODULE

RUSSIA’S NAUKA MODULE

Context

On 26th July 2021, a Russian module called Pirs on the International Space Station was detached. It was used by spacecraft as a docking port as well as by cosmonauts going for a spacewalk as a door. However, according to a report in IE, Russia’s Roscosmos will soon replace it with a much larger module called Nauka that would serve as the country’s main research facility on the floating laboratory. Nauka was launched from Kazakhstan on July 21,

About Nauka Module:

  • Nauka means Science in Russian, is a 42-feet-long module weighing about 20 tonnes, and is meant to serve primarily as a research facility.
  • It was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 21 using a Proton rocket, and is scheduled to be integrated with the ISS on 29th July 2021.
  • It is Russia's most ambitious research facility in space.
  • It is fitted with an oxygen generator, robotic cargo crane, a toilet and a bed for Russian astronauts.
  • It was sent into orbit using a Proton rocket (family of rockets in Russia - the most powerful in Russia’s space inventory) and will take 8 days to reach the ISS.
  • During this period, engineers and flight controllers will test Nauka in space, and prepare for its arrival on the space station.
  • It will be attached to the critical Zvezda module, which provides all of the space station’s life support systems and serves as the structural and functional centre of the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS).
