Saakshar Bharat Mission (SBM)

Saakshar Bharat Mission (SBM) was launched on 8th September 2009 for the districts having a low female literacy rate of 50% or below as per the 2001 Census.

Why in news:

  • The rate of female literacy in Telangana’s Sangareddy district has increased rapidly by the district administration’s support and help. The female literacy rate is 65.46% in India.
  • The district administration developed ‘Ammaku Akshara Mala’ -alphabet garland for mother and involved students in Classes VII to X.
  • They were asked to teach their mothers who were mostly members of the Self-Help Groups and not literate to read and write Telugu alphabets at home.

Key Points on Saakshar Bharat Mission:

  • It is a centrally-sponsored scheme. This seeks to create awareness of social disparities and a person’s deprivation on the means for its amelioration and general well-being.
  • It has four broader objectives-

1. Imparting functional literacy and numeracy to non-literates.

2. Acquiring equivalency to the formal educational system.

3. Giving relevant skill development programme.

4. To promote a learning society by providing opportunities to continue education.

  • The target of the programme is to impart functional literacy to 70 million non-literate adults in the age group of 15 years and beyond.
