SARDAR IQBAL SINGH LALPURA - NEW CHAIRMAN OF NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR MINORITIES

Context:

In the presence of Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Sardar Iqbal Singh Lalpura took charge as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities in New Delhi.

About National Commission for Minorities:

  • The Union Government established the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
  • In 1978, the Government of India set up a "Minorities Commission" to safeguard the interests of minorities.
  • After the enactment of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, the Minorities Commission became a statutory body and was renamed as the "National Commission for Minorities".
  • 6 religious communities, viz; Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Zoroastrians (Parsis) and Jains have been notified in the Gazette of India as minority communities by the Union Government all over India.
  • Original notification of 1993 was for 5 religious communities; Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Christians and Muslims.

Some Functions and Powers of the Commission:

  • Evaluate the progress of Minorities under the Union and the States.
  • Monitor the protection of the provisions of the Constitution and the laws enacted by Parliament and the Legislatures.
  • Make recommendations for the effective implementation of measures to protect the interests of the Central Government or State Governments.
  • Look for specific complaints about deprivation of rights and protection of minors and make such matters with the relevant authorities.
