Scientists from the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune have developed a biofortified, high protein wheat variety

Scientists working at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) situated in Pune, have developed a biofortified wheat variety named MACS 4028, which shows high protein content.

Key Points:

  • The wheat variety that has been developed is the Durum wheat, which is grown in arid regions and is mostly used in making pasta and hence is also known as Pasta wheat or Macaroni wheat.
  • The wheat variety developed by the scientists depicted high protein content approximating to 14.7%, has better nutritional quality with quantity of zinc equal to 40.3 ppm, and iron content equal to 46.1 ppm respectively.
  • MACS 4028 is a semi-dwarf wheat variety, which takes 102 days to mature and shows the superior and stable yielding ability of 19.3 quintals per hectare.
  • The wheat variety is resistant to leaf rust, stem rust, brown wheat mite, foliar aphids, and root aphids.
  • The MACS 4028 is included in the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) programme for United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the alleviation of malnutrition in a sustainable manner and help in achieving the Vision 2022 “Kuposhan Mukt Bharat”, the National Nutrition Strategy.

Note:

  • Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
  • Wheat cultivation in India happens mainly under rainfed and limited irrigation conditions, therefore, creating demand for drought-tolerant varieties.
