SCTIMST develops COVID19 diagnostic test kit Chitra GeneLAMP-N

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has developed Chitra Gene LAMP-N, which is a diagnostic test kit for COVID19 and detection of N Gene of SARS-CoV-2 and uses the reverse transcriptase loop-mediated amplification of viral nucleic acid (RT-LAMP).

Key Points:

  • The test kit has been developed by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an autonomous functioning under the Department of Science and Technology.
  • The test kit is priced at Rs. 1000 and provides results in half the time of Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction(rt-PCR).
  • The new diagnostic kit is among the first few confirmatory diagnostic tests for the N gene of SARS-CoV-2 using the RT-LAMP technique.
  • The test kit is highly specific for SARS-CoV-2 N-gene and is able to detect two areas of the gene ensuring that the test does not fail in case one of the areas of the viral gene goes under mutation while it is spreading.
  • The viral gene can be detected in 10 minutes using Chitra Gene LAMP-N and to produce results from the sample(from RNA extraction in swab), it takes less than 2 hours.
  • Minimum 30 samples can be tested in one batch in a machine which reduces the machine waiting time, thereby allowing a higher number of samples to be tested every day in different shifts.
  • The team that developed the kit was led by Anoop Thekkuveettil, a senior scientist of the Biomedical Technology wing of SCTIMST.
