SEA-TO-SEA VARIANT OF BRAHMOS SUPERSONIC MISSILE

Context:

On January 11, 2022, the Defence Research Development Organization test-fired the Brahmos Advanced Variant. It is a sea–to–sea variant of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile tested from INS Vishakhapatnam.

About the Test Fire:

• This is a step towards India becoming self-sufficient. Also, tests have confirmed the readiness of the Indian Navy.
• The Brahmos was developed under a joint venture between India and Russia.
• It can be launched into the air, sea, and land with a target range of 290 kilometres.
• It is a supersonic cruise missile that is part of the BrahMos Aerospace.

Background:

• India tested a land-attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in November 2020. It was tested from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

INS Vishakhapatnam:

• It is an indigenously built missile destroyer.
• It was built under Project 15B and was commissioned in November 2021.

Brahmos:

• It is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile.
• A combination of Brahmaputra and Moskva coined this name.
• The first phase of the Brahmos engine is triggered by a solid rocket booster, the second phase with liquid ramjet.
• The propellant used in the first phase is solid fuel, and the second phase is liquid fuel.

It can get high-speed Mach 2.0 to 2.8.
