SEED awards

SEED awards

14 start-ups have been selected for this year’s SEED awards. The list of finalists was announced on October 24, 2019. 

This awards are given annual which are granted to organisations working on sustainable development. For 2019, out of 906 applications across nine countries, 14 winners and 52 finalists have been selected for innovative and locally-led start-up eco-inclusive enterprises.

Key Points:

  • The SEED awards are generally granted to organisations working towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDG). 
  • This award highlights the contribution of green and social enterprises to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Every year, awards are decided under various categories.
  • This year’s categories include SEED Low Carbon, SEED Africa Awards, SEED South Africa Climate Adaptation Awards and SEED Gender equality award.
  • Under SEED Low Carbon category, the Aikya Organics located in Kanpur has won the award. This organization is working to promote gender equality by training nearly 1,200 women farmers. They are trying to achieve SDG by providing opportunities to follow natural farming techniques. The non-profit organization(NGO) sells products like mustard oil, rice grains, organic lentils, etc.
  • Apart from Aikya there are three more start-ups from India which received the award which are  Stonesoup, Aarohana Ecosocial Development, Ecozen Solutions and Farmers Fresh Zone. 
  • Fang Thai, an organisation from Thailand, has also been awarded which manufactures paper and packaging material from rice straw.
  • Mycotech, is a unique company based in Indonesia, which makes leather-like materials from a fungi, which are further converted to bags, wallets etc.
