Context

Recently, the Semeru volcano erupted in Indonesia’s East Java province.

Details

• Semeru - also known as "The Great Mountain" - is the highest volcano in Java and one of the most active.
• It previously erupted in December, 2019.
• Semeru volcano is also the part of the Island arcs formed by the subduction of the Indo-Australian plate below Sunda Plate (part of Eurasian Plate).
• The trench formed here is called Sunda trench whose major section is the Java Trench.
• Indonesia, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific’s Ring of Fire.
• The Ring of Fire (also known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Rim of Fire, the Girdle of Fire or the Circum-Pacific belt) is a region around much of the rim of the Pacific Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
• The Ring of Fire includes the Pacific coasts of South America, North America and Kamchatka, and some islands in the western Pacific Ocean.
• The Ring of Fire is a direct result of plate tectonics: specifically the movement, collision and destruction of lithospheric plates under and around the Pacific Ocean.
