Siachen Day observed on 13 April 2020

The Indian Army commemorated the 36th Siachen Day on 13 April 2020 to pay respect to the courage of Indian Army during ‘Operation Meghdoot’ and to honour the brave soldiers that are protecting the borders of the country under the cold and harsh conditions.

Key Points:

  • The Operation Meghdoot was launched on 13 April 1984 to gain control of the Siachen Glacier and Bilafond La pass and other passes lying on the Saltoro Ridgeline under Lieutenant General Prem Nath Hoon.
  • Siachen is the highest battleground in the world located 6000 metres above sea level, both India and Pakistan maintain a permanent military presence there.
  • Siachen is located in the Karakoram Range in North-West part of India. The Siachen Glacier is 76.4 km in length and covers around 10,000 sq km of uninhabited terrain.
  • Gaining control of the area became necessary since the Karachi Agreement signed in 1949 did not make it clear as to who had authority over Siachen Glacier.
  • So in 1974, Pakistan started permitting mountaineering expeditions in the Siachen Glacier and then was trying to stake claim over the area by the spring of 1983, thus arose the necessity to maintain a close watch on Siachen.
  • It was on 13 April 1984 that the then Capt. Sanjay Kulkarni raised the first Indian flag on Siachen Glacier at Bilafond La.
