Sixteen US states have formed a coalition to ask a federal court to block Donald Trump from proceeding with the national emergency that the president declared on 16 Feb 2019 in an effort to secure funds for his US-Mexico border wall.
The lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco court.
The states include New York, California, Maryland and Virginia and 12 other states.
These states argue that US president has no power to divert funds as they are vested in the US congress.
US president Donald Trump declared emergency on 16 Feb after Congress agreed to provide only $1.3 billion despite the demand of more than $5 billion by the president.
US president Donald Trump came to power on the promise of constructing a wall on the Mexico border. He argues that it is the gate for illegal immigrants and terrorists.
US president wants around $5.7 billion funding to build that wall but US Congress which is dominated by Democrats are not up to it.
