Solar Fence Farmland Protection Programme started by Tamil Nadu

The state government of Tamil Nadu is implementing the preliminary works of the unique Solar Fence Farmland Protection Programme. The programme is being implemented under the Central Agriculture Improvement Scheme.

Key Points:

  • The interim break from the usual agricultural activities due to Covid-19 pandemic is being used by the farmers in innovative works of preparation.
  • Many districts of the state of Tamil Nadu which include Coimbatore, Theni and Trichy, etc. have their boundaries along the foothills of the Western Ghats, making the agricultural lands in these districts along the boundaries at a risk of attack from animals.
  • The electric fences are powered by non-polluting solar panels which are eco-friendly and are being set up in various parts of the state to decrease the risk of attack from animals, especially elephants.
  • Under the Scheme, 50% of the construction cost of electric fences, will be provided as a subsidy to farmers.
  • Under the subsidy, power generating solar panels will be established and with a maximum limit of 2.18 lakh rupees fixed for availing subsidy.
