STEPS TAKEN BY CENTRE TO PROMOTE MANUFACTURING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Context:

According to the news published in PIB on 03 Dec 2021, the government has implemented various programs to improve electric vehicles in the country. These are as follows:

 (i) GST in electric vehicles has been reduced from 12% to 5%; GST on chargers / charging stations for electric vehicles has been reduced from 18% to 5%.

 (ii) The Ministry of Power has issued a notice to charge the infrastructure standards, which allow for private charging for residential and office space.

 (iii) The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has announced that battery-operated vehicles will be provided with green license plates and removed from permit requirements.

 (iv) MoRTH has issued a notice informing states to waive road tax on EVs, which will help reduce initial EV costs.

 (v) The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) amended Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 to establish charging stations and infrastructure for private and commercial buildings.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that according to the E-Vahan website, the details of registered electric vehicles in the country for the past two years are as follows:

About FAME Scheme:

  • The Ministry of Heavy Industries launched the FasterAdoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015 to improve the adoption of electric vehicles/hybrid (xEVs) in the country.
  • Currently, Phase II of the FAME India Scheme is being implemented for 5 years from April 01, 2019, with a total budget support of Rs. 10,000 crores.
  • This section focuses on supporting electrification of public and shared transportation and aims to support, with subsidies, 7090 Buses, 55000 e-4 Wheeler Passenger Cars, and 10 lakh e-2 Wheelers.
