STUDY ON HOW CLIMATE CHANGE WILL AFFECT THE CHILD BORN IN 2021

Context:

In a study published in the journal Science, researchers found that babies born today were more likely to be affected by adverse weather events than today's adults.

Key Findings of the Study:

• During its lifetime, a child born in 2021 is likely to experience double wildfires, double to triple droughts, nearly three times as many river floods and crop failures and about seven times as many as a person, he says, is 60 years old today.
• Under the current “insufficient” climate policies, the most extreme heat waves, affecting about 15% of the world today, could exceed 46% by the end of this century.
• However, if countries are able to adhere to their climate targets as determined under the Paris Climate Agreement, this effect could be limited to 22%, which is only 7% of the global area affected today.
• With regard to drought, tropical heat, river floods and crop failure, people under the age of 40 today will live what researchers call "unprecedented life".
