Sushil Chandra appointed Election Commissioner

Sushil Chandra, a 1980-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) official has been appointed as the election commissioner.

He will join the Election Commission of India as the second election commissioner.

Present chief election commissioner is Sunil Arora.

Who is Sushil Chandra?

  • He is a 1980-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
  • Prior to his new assignment, he was the chief of the central bureau of direct taxes CBDT, the apex policy making body of the Income Tax department.

Who appoints Election Commissioner?

  • President of India appoints the Election Commissioner, based on the recommendation made by incumbent government (Prime minister advised by council of ministers).
  • He has tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
  • He enjoys the same official status, salary and perks as available to Judges of the Supreme Court of India and High court.
  • He draws his salary from Consolidated Fund of India, similar to Chief Justice of India.
