TAMIL NADU’S “NEW POLICY FOR WOMEN 2021”

Context:

On December 29, 2021, the State of Tamil Nadu issued the “New Policy for Women 2021”. This policy will be in force for more than five years.

Important Provisions of the new policy:

• The new policy provides for martial arts training for school and college girls.
• In registered parties, women will also get 33.3% representation.
• Under MGNREGA, about 50 more person-days for all single-headed households and women-headed households.

Provisions for Education:

• The state will pay close attention to sending all children back to school, from poor families and special groups such as girls and children from SC-ST communities.
• The Scope of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya will be expanded mainly in the educationally backward blocks, to cover young girls as young as 19 years old. This step will help them to complete their schooling.
• The policy also aims to support at least 1,000 female student researchers from disadvantaged sections of society each year, especially in STEM subjects.

Transportation for Women:

• Under the new policy, all forms of transportation will be made available to women.
• On buses, the first portion of the seats will be for women. The front exit or entrance will only be used by women.

Free Women's Training Classes

• The Tamil Nadu government will also provide free or sponsored training classes for trials that include JEE, UPSC, CAT, and TNPSC, as well as higher management and technical courses to promote women's participation. 
• At least 3% of interest rates will be on education loans for girls who are going to college.
