Thailand has been elected as a member of the World Heritage Committee

Thailand has been selected as a member of the World Heritage Committee. This was done during the 22nd session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention in Paris. The representatives from 193 countries cast their votes to fill nine vacant seats on the 21-member World Heritage Committee.

Key Points:

  • The other new members are Egypt, Mali, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Russian Federation, and South Africa.
  • With this selection, it will be the fourth time Thailand has served on the World Heritage Committee. The term would end in the year 2023. 
  • Also, the committee will reconsider Bangkok's proposed listing of the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex and also Phu Phrabat Historical Park in 2020. 

About the World Heritage Committee:

The World Heritage Committee happens once every year. This committee consists of representatives from 21 member states to the convention elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The committee decides and approves whether a property can be added to the World Heritage List or not. The committee examines the state of conservation at listed sites. It then asks the respective member states to take action when they are not adequately managed.
