The female tiger is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected with COVID-19 in the US

On April 6, 2020, the Central Zoo Authority of the US asked all the zoos to stay on high alert after a tiger tested positive for COVID-19 at the Bronx Zoo in New York.

Key Points:

  • It is a four-year-old Malayan female tiger, named Nadia, which is suspected that she contracted the virus from a caretaker who was asymptomatic at that time.
  • This is the first time COVID-19 infections are reported on an animal.
  • Also till date there is no evidence that animals are also affected by COVID-19. Also, there is no evidence that a human can be infected by the infected by the virus from those animals.
  • Hence the samples are to be sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Disease in Bhopal, the National Research Centre on Equines in Haryana's Hisar and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
