The first day of India International Science Festival 2019 created the Guinness World Records for the largest astrophysics lesson

The first day of India International Science Festival (IISF) 2019 created the Guinness World Records for the largest astrophysics lesson, with a time duration of 45 minutes, and assembly of spectroscopes with the participation of over 1,598 students. The Inter-University Centre organised a session for Astronomy and Astrophysics. A memento was presented to the organisers on behalf of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Participants on the first-day session:

Students from many schools across India, who have a great interest in learning about the creation of the universe and the cosmic system, participated in the festival. The astrophysics session was dedicated to Dr C V Raman and Dr Meghnad Saha.

About IISF:

India International Science Festival (IISF) is the largest science festival in the world. The theme for the 2019 IISF festival is RISEN India-Research, Innovation, and Science Empowering the Nation.

Assembly of spectroscopes:

  • The astronomers use spectroscopes to study various details like temperature, the chemical composition of celestial objects hundreds, or millions of light-years away from the earth.
  • Anyone can easily make a small personal model of advanced spectroscopes by using a box made of cardboard. It should have a very narrow window that can be used to channel light into the spectroscope.
  • A small piece of a Compact Disc can be used to split the light by a process called diffraction. The construction of such a model was dedicated to Meghnad Saha and C V Raman.
