THIRUVALLUVAR DAY

About the Day:

  • The Tamil Nadu government celebrates January 15th (16th on leap year) as Thiruvalluvar Day in honour of the poet, as part of the Pongal celebrations.
  • Thiruvalluvar Day began on 17 and 18 May 1935.

About Thiruvalluvar:

  • Thiruvalluvar is less known except for the fact that he wrote novels.
  • There is no information about his family, place of birth, and religion.
  • He is believed to have lived in the city of Mylapore, in modern-day Chennai.
  • In the early 16th century, a temple was built inside the Ekambareswarar temple complex in Mylapore and dedicated to Thiruvalluvar. Thus, local people believe he was born in Mylapore, under a shrine inside the temple.
  • The last statue of a Tamil poet was unveiled in Ulsoor, near Bengaluru, in 2009.

History:

  • Although the period of his life is debatable, some claim that he lived during the eighth and ninth centuries.
  • The Tamil scholar, author, and father of the pure Tamil organisation, Maraimalai Adigal, had dated 31 BC as the year of Thiruvalluvar's birth. At the same time, Czech Czech literature and Indian languages, Kamil Zvelebil, noted that Valluvar lived about 500 AD.
