Three capitals for Andhra Pradesh- its logic and questions

CM of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s cabinet on 20th January 2020 approved a proposal to have three capitals for the state, amid protests by thousands of farmers of the Amaravati region and by Telugu Desam Party.

Key Points:

  • The government has proposed to preserve Amaravati as the legislative capital and making Visakhapatnam the home for executive and Kurnool as the judicial capital.
  • Stating that they are not changing the capital as such but only adding two new capitals.
  • The government decided to enact new legislation for decentralisation and inclusive development of all regions in the state for ensuring "balanced and inclusive growth" of AP.

Reason:

  • Regional imbalances, absence of equitable growth are few factors that have caused an acute sense of deprivation among many sections of the state population, leading to disturbances.
  • This solution would emphasize distributed development and decentralized administration to ensure outcomes of socio-economic progress which will be enjoyed equally by people of various regions.
