Key Points:

  • Three Chinese astronauts docked at the Tiangong space station on 5th June 2022. This marks a new milestone in Beijing’s drive to become a major space power.
  • Tiangong’s core module entered orbit earlier last year and is expected to operate for at least a decade. The completed station will be similar to the Soviet Mir station that orbited Earth from the 1980s until 2001.
  • Tiangong, officially the Tiangong space station, is a space station being constructed by China in low Earth orbit between 340 and 450 km above the surface.
  • It is roughly one-fifth the mass of the International Space Station and about the size of the decommissioned Russian Mir space station.
