  • Title IX, a federal civil rights law in the United States of America, is turning 50. 
  • Title IX was enacted as a follow-up to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. President Richard Nixon signed it into law on June 23, 1972. 
  • The law is best known for its role in gender equity in athletics and for preventing sexual harassment on campuses. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program that receives funding from the federal government.
