TOPS Scheme to be launched by the Government to for junior athletes

The Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs will launch the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Junior with the aim of grooming young athletes for the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. The announcement was made during the “Fit Hai To Hit Hai Fit India” webinar.

Key Points:

  • The TOPS scheme currently in place is for the senior athletes, who have been selected for the Olympics and the scheme also has top athletes of India in its roster.
  • The government has launched the TOPS scheme for Juniors in an effort to bolster India’s chances in finishing in the top 10 rankings of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
  • Under the scheme a series of programs are taking place for planning which includes, search and identification of talent, customizing the training, provision of facilities and top coaches and exposure trips.
  • A big base has been created as a result of the Khelo India program and other processes which have assisted in the identification of talent.
  • The government is also planning to start the scheme for 10-12-year-olds, so that with proper training and grooming they can be ready for the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
