Transformation of Indian Railways to 'Net Zero' Carbon Emission Transportation Network by 2030

In an effort to become self-reliant for its energy requirements, the Indian Railways will transform itself into a ‘Net Zero’ Carbon Emission Mass Transportation Network by 2030 by using the available unoccupied land for the development of renewable energy projects.

Key Points:

  • The Indian Railways has committed itself to the use of solar energy to match its power requirement for running the trains and become a ‘Green mode of transformation’ completely.
  • Solar power plants will be installed by the Ministry of Railways on the available unoccupied lands on a large scale and will accelerate the mission of conversion of Indian Railways into a ‘Net Zero’ Carbon Emission Railway.
  • The current demand of the Railways will be fulfilled by the solar projects that are being set up, which will make it the first transport organisation to be self-sufficient in terms of energy, which will help in making the railways, Atma Nirbhar in addition to being green.
  • The Indian Railways is currently procuring energy from different projects such as the 3 MW solar plant established at MCF, Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The railway is also testing the 1.7 MW power plant project at Bina, Madhya Pradesh that will be connected to the Overhead Traction System directly and will be commissioned within a period of 15 days.
