UN WORLD HAPPINESS REPORT 2022: INDIA RANKS 136th

Context

In the United Nations' World Happiness Report for the year 2022, India climbed to 136th place out of a total of 146 countries.

  • India was ranked 139th in the world in 2021. 
  • For the sixth year in a row, Finland has topped the World Happiness Report 2022.
  • Afghanistan has been ranked as the world's unhappiest country, with a score of 146.
  • The United Nations-sponsored index was released two days before March 20, the International Day of Happiness.

  • Denmark came in second place, while Iceland came in third, up from fourth place last year. 
  • Switzerland is ranked fourth, with the Netherlands in fifth and Luxembourg in sixth.
  • The top ten are completed by Sweden, Norway, Israel, and New Zealand.
  • The United States moved up three points to 16th, one rank ahead of the United Kingdom, while Canada dropped ten spots from fifth to 15th this year. 
  • France has risen to 20th place, its highest position too far.
  • In the yearly poll, India was ranked 136th, while Pakistan was ranked 121st. India improved three ranks a year earlier, moving up to 139th place.
  • Russia and Ukraine, at odds, are placed 80 and 98, respectively.
  • The happiest countries were Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania, while the happiest countries were Lebanon, Venezuela, and Afghanistan.
  • Lebanon is in the midst of an economic crisis, and it has slipped to the 146th position on the list. 
  • The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, on the other hand, has pushed the country to the bottom of the rankings.

  • On March 18, 2022, the World Happiness Report for 2022 was released. The report is now in its tenth edition.
  • Since 2012, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network has released the World Happiness Report, ranking countries based on how happy their residents estimate themselves to be.

The report is built on two main ideas: (1) measuring happiness or life assessment through opinion polls and (2) identifying major factors influencing well-being and life evaluation across countries.
