UNDER JAL JEEVAN MISSION CENTRE GRANTS RS. 1,667 CRORE TO MAHARASHTRA

Context:

The Union Government, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, is highly committed to providing a tap water supply to all rural households. The Government of India has released 1,666.64 Crore in Maharashtra under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Key Points:

• Under the Kal Jeevan Mission, a Central fund of ₹ 7,064.41 Crore has been allocated to Maharashtra in 2021-22, about four times the 2020-21 budget.
• There are 142.36 lakh rural households, of which 96.46 lakh (67.76%) households are connected to tap water.
• In 2021-22, the State plans to provide a tap water supply to 27.45 lakh homes.
• Continuing in 2021-22, Rs 2,584 Crore is allocated to Maharashtra as a grant of the 15th Finance Commission for Water and Sanitation to Rural Local Bodies/PRIs, and there is guaranteed funding of Rs 13,628 Crore over the next five years, which means by 2025- 26 to the rural local bodies.

Jal Jeevan Mission:

• It is operated in a decentralized manner following the ‘bottom-up approach.
• The local community plays a key role from planning to implementation and management to operation & maintenance.
• In this regard, the State is engaged in strengthening the Pani Samiti and developing a Village Action Plan and a similar mandate in Gram Sabha. The community deliberates on water supply schemes to be used.
