University of Hyderabad develops medicine to kill deadly malaria parasite

A research team from the University of Hyderabad has developed a medicine that efficiently kills the plasmodium falciparum parasite that causes malaria. A release from the varsity said that the polymer-based Nano-medicine was developed by a research group led by Pradip Paik.

Highlights:

  • According to Prof Paik,  the new formulation was efficient in killing plasmodium falciparum infection in red blood cells and added that the medicine could now be used for animal trials.
  • The World Health Organisation estimates that malaria, one of the deadliest scourges of mankind, afflicts about 212 million people every year and causes 4,29,000 deaths annually.

Malaria in India:

  • Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bite of anopheles mosquitoes or infected mosquitoes.
  • WHO estimates that India accounts for 75% of all malaria cases in South-East Asia.
  • About 95% of the Indian population resides in malaria endemic areas; 80% of malaria reported in the country is confined to areas where 20% of population resides - in tribal, hilly, hard-to-reach or inaccessible areas.
  • Malaria in India is particularly entrenched in low-income rural areas of eastern and north-eastern states, but important foci are also present in the central and more arid western parts of the country.
  • Despite many decades of intense research and development effort, there is no commercially available malaria vaccine at the present time.
  • RTS,S/AS01 is the most advanced vaccine candidate against the most deadly form of human malaria, P. falciparum
