Urban Forest inaugurated by the Environment Minister in Delhi

An Urban Forest was inaugurated at the Office Park of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on 2 July 2020 at the 10 Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi by Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Key Points:

  •  The region will become an attraction for the people of Delhi and will set an example for other offices to follow in Delhi. The region will become an area of dense urban forests with 12000 saplings of 59 indigenous species and multiple layers of trees.
  • The initiative of Urban Forests has been launched to decrease the high levels of air pollution.
  • Under the new design of the urban forest, various zones such as artistic, meditational and recreational zones have also been provided along with the gazebo, sitting spaces, watchtower, winding pathways etc.
  • The best species suited to the climate, soil and terrain of the region has been selected for the urban forest and is a part of the natural vegetation of Delhi.
  • The urban forests will be made self-sustainable within 2 years and will include the lowest maintenance, including de-weeding and watering.
  • The forest has been formed in an area a little more than 1 acre in size. The forest will also help in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
